MANILA, Philippines -- Education is the first step to stand a chance in finding decent work in the Philippines. Unfortunately, in a country where the magnitude of the poor population is pegged at 23 million people (NSCB, 2009), most young Filipinos do not even get close to applying for college, since many drop out from school or opt to work for a living.
A lot of young Filipinos also enter a labor market that does not have enough jobs for them. But getting a degree is still not equivalent to landing into a job. Even those with college diplomas cannot be assured of employment due to lack of opportunities and the mismatch between employees skills and those required by industry and the business sector.Year 2011, a window of opportunity opened when a pilot project of UN Agencies, namely ILO, IOM, UNICEF, and UNFOA, supported by the Spanish Government, with the DOLE as Lead implementing Partner launched The Joint Programme on Alternatives to Migration: Decent Jobs for Filipino Youth (JP YEM). Its aim is to increase access to decent work for disadvantaged young women and men in the country's poorest areas, and to improve policies on youth employment and migration by encouraging the participation of all stakeholders in the process. The programme is part of the MDG-Fund's efforts to help governments achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, promoting gender equality and empowering women, and developing a global partnership for development. The Joint Programmes focus particularly on improving life for the world's most marginalized people. The Joint Programme on Alternatives to Migration: Decent Jobs for Filipino Youth (JP YEM) will culminate on Nov 23, 2012. It will serve as a platform to present the achievements of the programme; share lessons learned; ensure sustainability of the program; and acknowledge and show appreciation to key programme players and implementers.

MANILA, Philippines -- Noel Cabangon has everything to be thankful for this Christmas. Currently, he is one of the most bankable artists in the music industry and one of the most popular singer-songwriters today. His album "Byahe" spawned numerous awards, including the elusive Double Platinum Record Award and a sweep in the 2010 Awit Awards. The same record topped the music charts for 20 weeks, while his most recent album, "Tuloy ang Byahe" earned him another Gold Record Award two months after its release.
Noel's most recent victory is his having another sold-out solo concert held last September 28 at the Music Museum. The said concert was not just filled to the brim, but attended by the President Noynoy Aquino himself, as well as DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Pop Diva Kuh Ledesma, among others.
Less than three months after it was first staged, "Tuloy ang Byahe" will have not just one but two repeat performances due to the overwhelming clamor of fans who still wish to see the show. The concert now billed "Tuloy ang Byahe, The Repeat, Ngayong Pasko" will be staged for two consecutive nights at The PETA Theater Center, New Manila Quezon city this coming December 13-14, 2012 at 8:00PM.
The repertoire will include several songs from Noel's "Byahe" albums and a look back on Noel's musical journey from a humble folk singer to a one of the top-selling recording artist today. It will feature many of his own compositions, which mirror his own journey from a self-confessed tambay ("Dito sa Kanto") to an artist for social change ("Ako'y Isang Mabuting Pilipino").
"Tuloy ang Byahe (The Repeat) Ngayong Pasko is another project to support PETA's 50@59 Take PETA Beyond 50 endowment fund campaign, which is meant to ensure the sustainability of PETA's cultural work and unique creative programs. More than just merrymaking and gift giving, the holidays is
that special time of the year where excess and extravagance seem to find its
place in just about every home. All around the city, holiday ornaments sparkle
and shine from every street corner and home rivaling the stars in the night’s
sky.
But along with the festive feel of the season, the holidays
bring with it a sense of fantasy—evident in our bedecked homes and even in the
way we dress. When it comes to holiday dressing, fashion takes on a more
luxurious, glamorous, and fantastic persona that can only be pulled off with a
lot of confidence and imagination.
Taking holiday dressing to a whole new level, Metro and
Metro Society are set to stage Metrowear Fantasy, the first holiday fantasy
haute couture show that will showcase the couture collections of four of the
Philippine fashion’s new wave of couture designers.
Inspired by famous themes and figures of the holiday season,
designers Martin Bautista, Joel Escober, John Herrera, and Mak Tumang bring to
life fantastic iconic holiday imagery by way of their beautiful clothing
creations. Witness their extravagant couture interpretations of The Nutcracker,
Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Snow Queen, and 12 Days of Christmas. The
designers’ mentors namely Rajo Laurel, Noel Crisostomo, Cary Santiago, and
Frederick Peralta will also be in attendance.
